YLEO Ratings

YLEO Ratings are our way of measuring how safe educational materials and books are for children.

To do this, we use a 5 star rating system:

5 stars — The safest

4 stars — Mostly Safe

3 stars — Somewhat Safe

2 Stars — Not so Safe

1 star — Not Safe

We use an internal scoring method that takes into account various factors while determining our YLEO Scores. Some of these factors include, but are not limited to violence, language, suggestive content, and socially controversial content.

It’s important to know that here at YLEO, we believe that Explicit sexual content is inherently nOT kid-safe. As such, we will not rate or list materials of that nature on our website.

We created YLEO ratings in response to an alarming trend in our country today: That socially controversial, age-inappropriate, and suggestive themes have been infiltrating books and media for children, including for children as young as infants and toddlers.

At YLEO we believe that kids should be allowed to be kids for as long as possible, and that parents/guardians have the right to choose when and how they introduce these adult-themed concepts to their children.

It’s our belief that books for children 10 and younger should not include most of these themes. However, as your child gets older you may want to start introducing more difficult concepts to them. This is why you may see lower rated books in our book lists meant for older kids and teens. The choice to introduce these topics and discussions to your child is entirely up to you.
